The Nova Scotia Department of Health is in the process of working with First Nations and other Aboriginal communities in Nova Scotia to develop an Aboriginal Health Policy Framework. The work is funded through the Aboriginal Health Transition Fund (AHTF). The purpose of the Framework is to ensure that the publically funded health care system in Nova Scotia is providing comprehensive health care to all Aboriginal Peoples living in the province.

The Department of Health has contracted Horizons Community Development Associates Inc (http://www.horizonscda.ca/) to evaluate the overall Adaptation Plan with the AHTF, and the Framework.  The evaluation will be checking to see whether the Adaptation Plan objectives are achieved, and whether the Framework removes barriers to the health care system, clarifies roles and responsibilities for delivering health care services, and engages Aboriginal peoples in a meaningful way in planning for health service delivery at all levels.

As part of its commitment to building capacity for research and evaluation, Horizons has assembled a talented team of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Research Assistants to conduct the evaluation and learn about research and evaluation throughout the process.  The work is being completed between August 2009 and April 2010.  This site is for use by the evaluation team.
