The Alliance membership is comprised of agencies and individuals with an interest in healthy eating, physical activity and the promotion of overall health. Members represent diverse organizations including but not limited to health charities, government agencies, community health boards, public health services, community groups, advocacy coalitions, etc.

Who Can be a Member of the Alliance?

The members of the Alliance for Healthy Eating and Physical Activity have two important things in common:

  • We are interested in promoting healthy eating, physical activity, and healthy body weight; and,
  • We believe that success in promoting healthy eating, physical activity, and healthy body weight is more likely if we work together and coordinate our actions.

If you or your organization agrees with the above, then you may want to consider joining us.

How Does Participating in the Alliance Benefit me and/or my Organization?

Playing an active role in the Alliance provides individual members and member organizations with opportunities for collaborative thinking, capacity building, and direction setting. It provides members with a venue to work towards a common goal - the promotion of healthy eating, physical activity, and healthy body weight.

In addition, being a member benefits you by:

  • providing you with partners with whom you can work to advocate for policies that support healthy eating and physical activity; and,
  • keeping you informed about Alliance sponsored events and conferences so that you can register early.

What are my Responsibilities as a Member?

All members are encouraged to play an active role in all aspects of the Alliance. However, we recognize that each member will contribute different resources (human, fiscal, or physical) to the Alliance, depending on their capacity to do so. Some members will be able to commit more time to Alliance activities than others.

As a member of the Alliance you will have the opportunity to:

  • read and support the Alliance Statement of Purpose;
  • respond to calls for your input from the Coordinating Group;
  • participate in as many Alliance sponsored events as you can;
  • actively promote Alliance messages that fit with your mandate;
  • share information about initiatives that promote healthy eating, physical activity, and healthy body weight with other members of the Alliance via the Coordinating Group;
  • if you are affiliated with an organization, keep informed about the work of the Alliance (members who are not affiliated with an organization are also welcome to join the Alliance); and,
  • consider participating in any of the Alliance action groups that meet your needs, or help start a new one around a topic that interests you.

Current Participating Organizations

In addition to a number of individual members, representatives from the following organizations/groups participate in the work of the Alliance:

  • Canadian Cancer Society, Nova Scotia Division

The Nova Scotia Alliance for Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (Alliance) is a network of agencies and individuals with an interest in promoting healthy eating and physical activity for overall health. Members of the Alliance bring diverse talents and perspectives together to identify priority areas for evidence-based action related to healthy eating and physical activity. Priorities of the Alliance are informed by available evidence and are expected to evolve as new evidence becomes available. All efforts are grounded in population health theory and practice.

Our Vision:

Nova Scotia is a province that enables healthy eating and physical activity to support and improve health and wellbeing through the creation of supportive environments, healthy public policy and programs that respect the diversity and needs of our population.

Our Mandate:

  • To facilitate communication and information sharing among those working to address healthy eating and physical activity at the local, provincial and national levels.
  • To improve the effectiveness of member efforts in promoting healthy eating and physical activity by facilitating networking and the identification of collaborative action.
  • To advocate on issues of importance and relevance to the promotion of healthy eating and physical activity including the need for sustained implementation and adequate funding of comprehensive strategies.

We Value:

  • The population health approach, recognizing that many factors influence health, including: income, social status, education, social support networks, employment and working conditions, physical environments, personal health practices, biology and genetic endowment, health services, and healthy child development;
  • The unique strengths, experience, and expertise of all organizations and individuals that participate in the Alliance;
  • Building upon existing programs and experiences, whenever possible;
  • Decisions and actions based on the best available evidence; and,
  • The full participation of member organizations and individuals, recognizing that each will contribute various resources to the Alliance, depending on their capacity to do so.

Structure of the Network:

The Alliance is comprised of a Coordinating Committee that reflects the strategic priorities of the network, and a broader membership of interested individuals and organizations.

Coordinating Committee:

The Coordinating Committee is formed from the Alliance members (individuals and organizations) and is responsible for facilitating the work of the Alliance.

For more information about the responsibilities of the Coordinating Committee, please see the
Alliance Terms of Reference.
