In 2009, the CEOs/EDs of the four organizations sat down to explore ways to work together more formally. This was followed up with a national consultation that looked at everything BUT governance and resulted in the One Voice, Safer Canada report released in June 2010. In September 2010, the four organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding and began to investigate a merged entity. Ultimately the best course of action was believed to be the creation of a new organization with a new brand that combines the best of all four key players, and is designed to meet future challenges and need. This initiative remains in the early stages for now, and much of the detail has not yet been finalized.

At present, this new organization is being referred to as “One Voice NewCo”. It will be a national organization with equal voice across Canada and a vision of being the strategic injury prevention partner for government, the health system, researchers, business, and communities. The new organization's mandate will encompass all ages as well as intentional and unintentional injuries (it may partner with other existing organizations on parts of the mandate in order not to duplicate/overlap). Its exact structure is yet to be finalized. The next step in its creation will be the hiring of a CEO, who will then help determine that structure. Its location has yet to be determined, although we do know it will be in Toronto. It is anticipated that the new organization will be staffed utilizing the experience found in the four existing organizations. “One Voice NewCo” should formally become an organization between April and September 2012.

"I ThinkFirst" Contest 2012

Got a kid in your life who is creative and wants to win helmets for their entire classroom??
Despite their ability to positively influence the health and well-being of Canadians, sports activities contribute to a significant number of injuries among children and youth, yet many of those injuries are predictable and preventable. With the support of the Public Health Agency of Canada, the project partners will work together to reduce injuries, particularly as it relates to brain injuries and concussions, while creating the conditions for active and safer play throughout the Canadian sport system. The project will produce an increased national awareness of head injury and concussion know-how, targeting coaches, trainers, educators, health professionals, community leaders, parents and athletes.

Each project partner brings a unique network, reach, expertise, and set experiences to the initiative that will combine to effectively reach Canadians across a broad geographic scope and will provide opportunities to engage a host of individuals through active engagement opportunities and to train those who directly administer the sport experience to millions of children and youth across Canada. Overall, the project partners’ combined efforts will contribute to creating awareness, building capacity, engaging communities and their citizens as well as educating and training those who deliver sports through activities that focus on brain injury and concussion prevention and treatment using a common, united, consistent and reliable message.

New online training course by ThinkFirst Canada can protect young players from serious long term health consequences

Toronto, ON, December 15, 2011 - ThinkFirst Concussion Education Online is now immediately accessible to Canadians, thanks to the collaborative efforts of ThinkFirst Pensez d'Abord Canada and Safe Communities Canada, two not-for-profit organizations dedicated to injury prevention. Dr. Charles Tator, founder of ThinkFirst Canada and widely known for his strong public profile on brain injury and sport, celebrates this launch as an opportunity to provide comprehensive online concussion education, accessible across Canada.

Dr. Charles Tator notes, "The decisions made following an impact to the head are extremely important and too often we see young players being left in the game when they should be removed and assessed by a physician. Also, some players return to play before they have fully recovered from a concussion."

Now, parents, teachers, coaches, trainers and youth athletes can learn more about concussion prevention by taking ThinkFirst Concussion Education Online. Course content is based on material reviewed by ThinkFirst Canada's Concussion Education and Awareness Committee, a group which includes neurosurgeons, researchers, and leaders in sport-injury prevention. The course can be completed in less than an hour, from any location, with technical support available 24/7. Participants who pass the course test can download and print a Certificate of Completion.

Misunderstanding about the nature of concussion can result in unsafe choices for player health, and lead to more serious, long-term health consequences. A concussion is a brain injury and education is a key component to protecting young athletes’ health. This includes learning how to recognize a concussion as well as how to properly manage a safe and healthy return to play. This online initiative, in addition to ThinkFirst Canada’s concussion education resources, will help parents, coaches, trainers and teachers to gain the knowledge and confidence to make appropriate in-the-moment decisions and the understand the return to play protocol for concussion - every time, in every sport.

Both ThinkFirst Canada and Safe Communities Canada believe that Canadians want to learn more about preventing injury and that they will take the personal initiative to take concussion training if it is affordable and convenient. “Build it and they will come” is more than the catch phrase from an old baseball movie. It is the heartfelt belief of two organizations dedicated to injury prevention.

This year's campaign is all about appreciating life and recognizing that our actions to keep safe on the road has enabled us to live, while many have been taken on the road.

By embracing life, we hold the values of road safety high and move forward in life with road safety a priority in our minds. While we embrace life, we also remember the tragic loss of life on the road where many have lost loved ones. This campaign remembers them and in their name, we go forward promising to spread the message of road safety to help prevent future tragedies.

This year, we launch the 'Embrace Life' photo competition and you can take part today. The best entry will receive 1000 euros for their chosen road safety project and their photos will be used in YOURS publications as well as in our media. The best photos will be the most creative and innovative and captured in a poignant and positive light.

What is the Embrace Life Photo Competition?

We want you to show us how you embrace life! We all cherish the precious nature of life and we know that 1.3 million people are killed every year on the world's roads and millions more are seriously injured. So, as supporters of road safety, we want you to take a picture of yourself (and of your loved ones if you want) holding one of your favorite items showing that you embrace life and promise to stay safe on the road.

This can be done in two or more ways:

Reasons to embrace life: Embracing your own life by taking a picture holding your favorite item, this item will be something that symbolizes your love of life: (candle, flower) or an object of choice (family picture, football or other sport item, indispensable item: mobile, pen and pad, paint brush and easel, a young family member, baby etc)

Remembering a road crash victim by holding a photo of them or holding their favorite possession and taking a a photo of this.

Taking a picture of road safety in action - this could be a photo of you holding/wearing your hemlet, a seatbelt or even high visibility clothing. This is an option if you can't think of your favorite Embrace Life items!

We then want you to send us your photo via email to embracelife@youthforroadsafety.org and add a 1 line description to the email for each photo telling us what your item is along with the following in the name of the photo file: name, age and country - e.g JoeBloggs19Canada.

All information can be found in our instruction video!

We will then brand the photos like this...(example as above) and use them in an online photo exhibition as well as create a publication and exhibit the photos in hard copy at our next YOURS events.

By taking part in this campaign, you embrace the value of road safety by appreciating what you hold dear in your life; we realize that the things we hold dear in our lives mean nothing if we are not here to appreciate them. By taking a photo of yourself and your loved ones, you commit to safeguarding your lives while on the road and promise to follow road safety commitments so that you can continue to embrace life and enjoy it.

The theme for the conference is ‘Safe roads for everyone – Coming together from all directions’. The theme emphasizes the importance of sharing strategies whose aim is safe roads for all road users by focusing on lowering crashes among over represented groups. Through our different viewpoints delegates can address the issue of road safety ‘coming from different directions’. The theme will be highlighted at the conference by means of panel discussions and the plenary sessions.

One week before CIPSPC registration fee rises $100!

Our special discount offer ends Oct. 7, for the Canadian Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion Conference, to be held Nov. 16-18, 2011, in beautiful, downtown Vancouver. To learn more about the award or for information on how to make a nomination, please go to www.cccip.ca.

The CCCIP Award for Collaborative Excellence will recognize a Collaborative that has systematically identified a significant injury challenge, that has recognized that the best approach for addressing that challenge is a collaborative one, that has worked together effectively to address it. The core of any effective collaboration is the quality of the relationships amongst its partners and this nomination process assumes from the outset that those quality relationships exist in each nominated Collaborative, and it requires that they be articulated. A second underlying assumption of this award is that it is project based.

Update from the 11th World Conference on Injury Prevention & Safety Promotion

Kia ora!

On behalf of the National Organising Committee we wish to thank all of those who have registered their interest for the 11th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion, taking place in Wellington, New Zealand on 1 - 4 October 2012.
What is the Safety 2012 World Conference?
It’s the 11th biennial, international conference on injury prevention and safety promotion, co-sponsored by the World Health Organization.

The conference will bring together the world’s leading injury prevention and safety researchers, practitioners, policy makers, and advocates, to debate, discuss and share information and experience.

Theme for 2012 conference
The key theme of Safety 2012 is Connecting pathways for a vibrant and safer future. This theme reflects the intellectual and philosophic approach towards injury prevention of the host country New Zealand’s injury prevention sector. It’s also consistent with the aspirations of the WHO Western-Pacific Region Framework for Action on Injury and Violence Prevention 2008-2013.

Who’s organising the 2012 event?
Safety 2012 is organised by the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), Safe Communities Foundation New Zealand (SCFNZ), and the University of Otago’s Injury Prevention Research Unit (IPRU). Numerous partners and colleagues in New Zealand, Australia, and internationally will also contribute to the planning and success of the conference.

The resolution, spurred by the WHO/UNICEF World report on child injury prevention, provides a platform to support action on preventing child injuries, which are the leading cause of death for children over the age of 5 years. More than 830,000 children die each year from road traffic crashes, drowning, burns, falls and poisoning.

The resolution urges Member States to prioritize the prevention of child injuries; implement the recommendations of the World report on child injury prevention; and develop and put into practice a multisectoral policy and plan of action with realistic targets. It calls upon the WHO Director-General to collaborate with Member States in establishing science-based policies to prevent child injury; to encourage research, build capacity, and mobilize resources for child injury prevention; and to continue providing technical support to countries to develop and implement child injury prevention measures and strengthen emergency and rehabilitation services. The resolution also calls upon the WHO Director-General to establish a network with organizations of the United Nations system, international development partners and nongovernmental organizations to ensure effective coordination and implementation of activities for child injury prevention.

In adopting the resolution, around 20 Member States voiced their strong support for the initiative, many making note of the toll that injuries take on the lives of children in their countries. The delegate from Bangladesh noted that child injury is a "national catastrophe", while the delegate from the United States stated that child injury prevention should be part of each country's plan for child and adolescent health and that child injury prevention should be integrated within child survival programming.

It is designed to enable Canadian injury prevention practitioners to examine Canadian strategy options for unintentional child injury, move away from what has ‘always been done’ and move toward good investments - strategies that are known to work or have the greatest probability of success.

This document is based on the 2006 European Child Safety Good Practice Guide, which was launched by the European Child Safety Alliance (the Alliance) in order to provide guidance on proven, effective injury prevention strategies. Safe Kids Canada formally partnered with the Alliance to bring the Guide to Canada.

Evidence-based good practices are provided in this guide for those considering uptake, transfer and implementation of specific strategies or interventions. In particular, evidence "at-a-glance” tables include referenced evidence statements and transfer / implementation points on 11 child safety topics, and 17 case studies demonstrate ‘real world’ success in at least one Canadian context.

The Act directs the Federal government to establish a national suicide prevention strategy, in consultation with the provincial, territorial, and First Nations governments.

“Since introducing the bill, I have received calls and emails of support from individuals, organizations, and politicians across the country,” said Leslie. “The enormous impact suicide has on families, friends and communities is clear from the stories I’ve been hearing. There are many people out there working to prevent suicide, and we know from other countries that a coordinated national strategy would expand and strengthen their efforts.”

Each day ten people die as a result of suicide in Canada, with over 3500 Canadians dying each year. It is the third leading cause of death among 25 to 49 year olds, and the second leading cause of death in the 10 to 24 age group. The suicide rate for Aboriginal youth is four to six times higher than that of non-Aboriginal Canadians. Other vulnerable groups include seniors, and lesbian, gay and transgendered individuals.

Leslie is launching a campaign to build support for the bill which will include a letter, petition, postcard, and ways to participate through social media. The information and requests for endorsements will be sent to health care organizations, governments, community groups and individuals throughout the country.

“I want to let people know there is a way to communicate with the federal government,” said Leslie. “The need for suicide prevention efforts at a national level is a message that must be heard and acted upon.”

They all have really bad helmet hair!

Helmet use has risen dramatically over the last decade as winter athletes have become more aware of the benefits of helmet use, as well as the risks and consequences of sustaining a brain injury. In Nova Scotia, helmets are worn by 70-80% of skier s and snowboarders on the province’s three ski hills. Although pleased with the high rates of usage, the ski hill operators, in partnership with Canadian Ski Patrol and several injury prevention organizations, wanted a fun way to increase helmet wearing among those still not using helmets. As a result, the Wear It Proud campaign was developed to celebrate the official hair-do of Canadian winters – helmet hair. Wear It Proud asks Nova Scotia ski and snowboard helmet wearers to submit photos of their helmet hair to www.wearitproud.org where people can vote for the “best” worst hair. There are several great prizes for runners-up and the person with the most votes will win a ski trip to Mont Tremblant.

Research has shown that helmets are highly effective at preventing head injuries to skiers and snowboarders of all ages. Traumatic brain injuries are responsible for the majority of deaths on Canadian ski hills. Survivors of brain injuries may have permanent disabilities and often face a long and difficult recovery process. However when done safely skiing and snowboarding are wonderful ways for Canadians to enjoy winter and keep active. Increasing helmet use is thus an important part of keeping skiers and snowboarders safe on the slopes and is encouraged for people of all ages on all terrain.

Canada's New Road Safety Strategy

OTTAWA, Jan. 26 /CNW/ - The Ministers Responsible for Transportation and Highway Safety have approved a new five-year Road Safety Strategy under which Canada will continue to strive to have the safest roads in the world. The strategy will be used by individual jurisdictions to develop federal/provincial/territorial action plans to address key highway safety concerns and priorities for their respective and unique situations.

Road Safety Strategy 2015 will carry on the progress that has been achieved in reducing fatalities and serious injuries on Canada's roads since 1996 when Canada's first road safety plan was introduced. The provisional fatality total for 2009 is 8.7% lower than the number of road users killed in traffic crashes during 2008 and represents a 25.1% reduction over the 1996-2001 baseline figure. This is the lowest death toll on record in Canada in more than 60 years.

The new Road Safety Strategy is the result of a broad collaborative effort between all levels of government, public and private road safety stakeholders and the enforcement community. It provides each province and territory with a wide variety of solutions to address key road safety risks - initiatives that are focused on road users, the vehicles they use and the roadway infrastructure on which they operate. The Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) will lead the implementation of the strategy and support stakeholders in the process.

"This strategy represents Canada's desire to be a leader in road safety," said Chuck Strahl, the Federal Minister of Transport and Co-Chair of the Council of Ministers Responsible for Transportation and Highway Safety. "It highlights our ambition to have the best possible road safety outcomes for Canada."

"The number of road fatalities and serious injuries is declining nationwide," said Luke Ouellette, Minister of Transportation of Alberta and Co-Chair of the Council of Ministers Responsible for Transportation and Highway Safety. "These results are encouraging and we look forward to continued improvement over the next five years."

The unveiling of Road Safety Strategy 2015 coincides with the National Year of Road Safety in 2011, an ambitious undertaking which aims to raise public awareness and promote road safety activities nationwide. The Canadian Global Road Safety Committee, whose membership is made up of injury prevention and road safety professionals, is leading this initiative.

It is expected that Road Safety Strategy 2015 will continue to inspire all Canadians to work together toward the common objective of making Canada's roads the safest in the world. Road Safety Strategy 2015 will be officially launched at CCMTA's 2011 Annual Meeting, to be held May 15-19, 2011, in Victoria, B.C.

ROAD SAFETY STRATEGY 2015 - BACKGROUNDER http://ccmta.ca/english/pdf/RSS_2015_Backgrounder.pdf

CCMTA is a non-profit organization comprising representatives of the provincial, territorial and federal governments of Canada which makes decisions on administrative and operational matters dealing with licensing, registration and control of motor vehicle transportation and highway safety. Member States expressed strong support for the resolution, and the inclusion of child injury prevention within the child survival agenda. There were many strong statements of support from members of the Executive Board. Included amongst these were statements from China and the United States, which both made reference to the fact that it will be difficult to achieve Millennium Development Goal 4 to reduce child mortality in some countries without addressing child injury. Seychelles, speaking on behalf of the countries of the WHO African Region, added that investments and efforts made in immunization programmes and other infectious disease programming stand to be undone if children are to die a few short years later from injury. These three statements are illustrative only; globally the entire discussion was very supportive.

Following a number of proposed amendments - many of which either directly strengthened the resolution or made it more comprehensive - the resolution was adopted by the Executive Board on 24 January 2011. The resolution will now pass to the next session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) in May 2011 with the recommendation that it be adopted by the WHA.

The resolution may be further amended during the WHA, but currently calls for Member States to: prioritize the prevention of child injury and ensure necessary intersectoral coordination mechanisms are established or strengthened; ensure funding mechanisms for public health programmes for child survival or child health cover child injury prevention; and implement as appropriate the recommendations of the WHO/UNICEF World report on child injury prevention, among others. The resolution also requests the Director-General of the World Health Organization to: collaborate with United Nations organizations, international development partners and NGOs to establish a mechanism for communication and coordination of child injury; facilitate the adaptation of child injury prevention interventions from developed to developing settings; and support capacity building, data collection, and emergency care within Member States, among other initiatives.
