Call for papers on injuries: Chronic Diseases and Injuries in Canada

Chronic Diseases and Injuries in Canada (CDIC) [www.publichealth.gc.ca/cdic] has formally changed its name to include the word "Injuries".  The editors of the journal would be interested in seeing papers that support or challenge current platforms for injury risk assessment and/or make novel use of available data sources to report on injury risk factors.  They would also be interested in receiving manuscripts of structured reviews of population interventions meant to reduce injury risk in the Canadian population.

Published by the Public Health Agency of Canada, this quarterly peer-reviewed journal discusses important issues in chronic disease and injury prevention, surveillance and epidemiology.  The journal is indexed in MEDLINE, Scopus, SciSearch, Journal Citation Reports, CAB Abstracts/Global Health and the Canadian Virtual Health Library.

While still a niche publication, CDIC has tripled its submissions since 2008.  It has just received its first impact factor (1.09).  As CDIC is open access and fully bilingual, its articles are picked up by francophone researchers in Europe and Africa.

Submission guidelines may be found at: http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/publicat/cdic-mcbc/authinfo-eng.php

For more information about our focus on "Injuries": http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/publicat/cdic-mcbc/31-3/ar-01-eng.php

    Submission deadlines are as follows: May 15, 2012, August 15, 2012, November 15, 2012, January 1, 2013, etc.

  • Safe Kids Canada, Safe Communities Canada, SMARTRISK, ThinkFirst Canada to Merge

Over the past couple of years, there has been discussion among Safe Kids Canada, Safe Communities Canada, SMARTRISK, and ThinkFirst Canada toward greater consolidation or a “merger” of our operations. In 2009, the CEOs/EDs of the four organizations sat down to explore ways to work together more formally. This was followed up with a national consultation that looked at everything BUT governance and resulted in the One Voice, Safer Canada report released in June 2010. In September 2010, the four organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding and began to investigate a merged entity. Ultimately the best course of action was believed to be the creation of a new organization with a new brand that combines the best of all four key players, and is designed to meet future challenges and need. This initiative remains in the early stages for now, and much of the detail has not yet been finalized.

At present, this new organization is being referred to as “One Voice NewCo”. It will be a national organization with equal voice across Canada and a vision of being the strategic injury prevention partner for government, the health system, researchers, business, and communities. The new organization's mandate will encompass all ages as well as intentional and unintentional injuries (it may partner with other existing organizations on parts of the mandate in order not to duplicate/overlap). Its exact structure is yet to be finalized. The next step in its creation will be the hiring of a CEO, who will then help determine that structure. Its location has yet to be determined, although we do know it will be in Toronto. It is anticipated that the new organization will be staffed utilizing the experience found in the four existing organizations. “One Voice NewCo” should formally become an organization between April and September 2012.
